Last year probably wasn’t the winter you were expecting. Kentucky in the winter usually means gathering together with loved ones in your home, going to see a light show, or celebrating in classic Kentucky style: with live music and bourbon. But the pandemic prevented that and for many cabin fever set in.

Winter Activities Near Louisville, Kentucky

Now another winter is arriving and life still isn’t back to normal. But with the advent of covid-19 vaccines, there are plenty of safe activities available in Louisville for those visiting on a Kentucky winter vacation and for locals. So, here are some activities to make the most of this winter! Get in the Holiday Spirit

Feel the crisp winter air on your face, marvel at sparkling lights, and connect to the holiday season by seeking out one of the holiday shows, events, or many other Christmasy things to do in Louisville.

Whether you celebrate Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, or something else, go see the Lights Under Louisville for a true one-of-a-kind holiday experience. You’ll see over 3,000,000 individual lights and 850 characters during your 30-minute drive through Louisville’s Mega Cavern. And it’s the only light show of its kind in the country! You can also check out Gardens Aglimmer at the Waterfront Botanical  Gardens or Winter Illuminations at the Parklands of Floyd Park for a self-guided walking light show. Additionally, Louisville is full of festive neighborhoods, like Hillcrest Avenue and Lake Forest, that host beautiful light displays — and they’re free!

You could also watch ballet dancers perform in “The Brown-Forman Nutcracker'' at Louisville's Kentucky Center between Dec. 11 and 23. With spectacular sets, costumes, and artistry the show promises its audience transportation to the magical realm of the Sugar Plum Fairy.

For the history-lovers out there, one unique Louisville Christmas event is the Christmas Tour offered at the Conrad-Caldwell House Museum. The mansion, known as Conrad’s Castle, began construction in 1859 and is a historic landmark. You can take a candlelit tour through the mansion’s Richardsonian Romanesque architecture and learn how prominent Louisville families, like the mansion’s former owners, celebrated Christmas during the Golden Age.

See a Show or Listen to Music

Find respite from the cold and enjoy some entertainment at Louisville’s theaters, arenas, and entertainment venues. You can check out the Harlem Globetrotters, who combine basketball and theater, at the KFC Yum! Center, or see who’s performing at the Louisville Palace Theatre. Use this 2021 guide to see which shows Louisville theaters are playing this winter!

Louisville, like all of Kentucky, is a hotspot for live music. Stevie Ray’s Blues Bar is one such live music venue that offers blues, rock, and jazz music, as well as drinks, six days a week. The only vintage arcade in Louisville — the 1938 Zanzabar — is also an intimate, award-winning live music venue. It even puts on weekly pinball tournaments and Sunday trivia nights!

Stay Active

If you want to be active this winter, spend a day meandering through one of Louisville’s museums. There’s the Muhammad Ali Center; the Kentucky Derby Museum; and the Smithsonian’s Frazier History Museum, where you can learn about local history. It’s also, incidentally, where the Kentucky Bourbon Trail Welcome Center is located (wink, wink).

Speaking of distilleries, stay warm in more ways than one by tasting some of Kentucky’s famous bourbon. Once you’ve left the Frazier History Museum, you can start your tour at one of the four distilleries located within a mile of the museum — or you can book a tour in advance. Check out the Kentucky Bourbon Trail Itinerary or explore distilleries on your own.

Spend Time Outside

Soak in the season with ice skating and other outdoor things to do in Louisville this winter! The Fete de Noel Festival, located in the Paristown Arts and Entertainment District, is a winter village that features Louisville’s only authentic outdoor skating rink. If the skating tires you out, take a break to shop, eat, enjoy a holiday movie, or decorate ornaments in the village. The festival is open for six weeks from Nov. 27 to Jan. 3.

While we’re on the topic of outdoor activities, you may be wondering: does it snow in Louisville? The answer is sometimes. Louisville on average receives about nine inches of snowfall annually while the national average is 28 inches. But, on the occasion that there’s enough snow for sledding or skiing, Kentucky’s rolling hills become the perfect winter playground!

Does being underground count as being outside? Either way, there’s no debate that exploring Kentucky’s underground cave systems — which stay at a pleasant 54 degrees Fahrenheit — will help you shake-off cabin fever. You can visit Mammoth Cave National Park, located an hour-and-a-half outside of Louisville, and take a tour through the world’s longest known cave system. You’ll see tall canyons, steep cliffs, tunnels sparkling with gypsum, and learn about early life!

Of course, there’s also the Mega Cavern, an underground theme park located right under Louisville, that offers ziplining, jeep tours, and other adventurous activities.

Winters in Kentucky can be magical or downright bleak depending on how you choose to spend the season. So, get outside, see a show, take a tour, celebrate the holidays — do whatever you need to — and make the most of this winter! And if getting out of the house doesn’t cure your cabin fever, it might be time to consider remodeling your kitchen, living room, or even the whole house. A well-thought-out plan will help you stay organized, manage costs effectively, and ensure that your renovations align with your overall goals. Upgrade the Kitchen: The kitchen is often considered the heart of the home and a major selling point for buyers. To maximize your home's value, invest in high-quality appliances, modern cabinetry, and sleek countertops. Consider adding a center island or upgrading the lighting to enhance functionality and aesthetics. Upgrading the kitchen can yield one of the highest returns on investment in terms of home renovations. Revamp the Bathrooms: Bathrooms play a crucial role in a home's appeal and can significantly influence buyers' decisions. To add value to your home, focus on updating outdated fixtures, refreshing the tile, and enhancing the overall look and feel of the space. Consider adding luxury touches like a rainfall showerhead, a freestanding bathtub, or heated flooring for added comfort and allure. Boost Curb Appeal: First impressions matter, and the exterior of your home sets the tone for potential buyers. Enhance your home's curb appeal by investing in landscaping, adding a fresh coat of paint to the front door, and replacing worn-out siding or roofing. How to Choose the Right Flooring for Your Space
When it comes to home remodeling, few decisions are as significant as choosing the right flooring. Not only does flooring play a crucial role in the aesthetic appeal of a space, but it also impacts comfort, durability, and maintenance. With a plethora of options available in the market today, finding the perfect flooring for your space can be overwhelming. To help guide you through this process, we've put together a comprehensive guide on how to choose the right flooring for your home. Types of Flooring: Hardwood: Known for its timeless elegance and durability, hardwood flooring adds warmth and character to any space. With proper care and maintenance, hardwood floors can last for decades and even increase the value of your home. Engineered Wood: Engineered wood floors offer the perfect blend of beauty and durability. Constructed with multiple layers of wood veneer glued together, they withstand fluctuations in humidity and temperature better than solid hardwood. Plus, their versatility allows for installation in areas where solid wood might not be suitable, like basements or over concrete slabs. With a wide range of finishes and styles available, engineered wood floors provide timeless elegance for any space. Tile: Available in a variety of materials such as ceramic, porcelain, and natural stone, tile flooring offers unmatched durability and versatility. Whether you prefer the classic appeal of subway tile or the rustic charm of slate, tile flooring is an excellent choice for high-traffic areas and moisture-prone spaces like bathrooms and kitchens. Luxury Vinyl Plank or Luxury Vinyl Wood: With its realistic wood and stone visuals, luxury vinyl flooring provides the look of natural materials with added durability and easy maintenance. Waterproof and scratch-resistant, luxury vinyl is perfect for households with children and pets, offering peace of mind without sacrificing style. Laminate: Offering the look of hardwood at a fraction of the cost, laminate flooring is a budget-friendly option that is highly resistant to scratches, stains, and fading. It's easy installation and low maintenance make it a popular choice for homeowners seeking the beauty of hardwood without the hefty price tag. Consider Your Lifestyle Before diving into the world of flooring options, take a moment to assess your lifestyle and the specific needs of your household. Do you have children or pets? Are you looking for flooring that can withstand high traffic areas? Understanding how your space will be used on a daily basis will help narrow down your options. For busy households with children and pets, durable and easy-to-clean flooring options like laminate, luxury vinyl, or tile might be ideal. If you're aiming for a more luxurious feel in a low-traffic area such as a bedroom or formal living room, hardwood or plush carpeting could be suitable choices. Evaluate Maintenance Requirements Different types of flooring come with varying maintenance needs. While some materials require minimal upkeep, others may demand regular cleaning, sealing, or refinishing. Consider how much time and effort you're willing to invest in maintaining your floors. For instance, hardwood floors offer timeless beauty but require periodic refinishing to keep them looking their best. On the other hand, materials like ceramic tile or luxury vinyl are relatively low maintenance and easy to clean, making them perfect for busy households. Assess Durability Durability is another critical factor to consider, especially in high-traffic areas such as kitchens, entryways, and family rooms. Opting for durable flooring ensures that your investment will stand the test of time and remain in top condition for years to come. Hardwood, laminate, and tile are known for their longevity and resilience against wear and tear. However, advancements in technology have also made luxury vinyl a popular choice for homeowners seeking durable and stylish flooring options. Explore Style and Design Beyond functionality, flooring plays a significant role in defining the style and ambiance of a space. Whether you prefer the warmth of hardwood, the sleekness of tile, or the softness of carpet, there's a flooring option to complement every aesthetic preference. Consider the overall design scheme of your home and choose flooring that enhances the existing décor. Keep in mind factors such as color, texture, and pattern to create a cohesive and visually appealing look throughout your space. Budget Wisely Finally, it's essential to establish a realistic budget for your flooring project. Flooring costs can vary significantly depending on the material, quality, and installation requirements. Take the time to research different options and work with our team to ensure that your budget aligns with your expectations. While it may be tempting to opt for the cheapest option available, remember that investing in high-quality flooring can save you money in the long run by reducing the need for frequent replacements and repairs. Choosing the right flooring for your space is a decision that should not be taken lightly. By considering factors such as lifestyle, maintenance requirements, durability, style, and budget, you can narrow down your options and find the perfect flooring to suit your needs and preferences. Whether you opt for the timeless elegance of hardwood, the versatility of tile, or the durability of luxury vinyl, investing in quality flooring will enhance the beauty and functionality of your home for years to come.
